There was one reserve down on The Cape that had a major population of these tiny crabs (this one is big but isn’t much more than an inch across). They are very sensitive to vibration and disappear down their burrows when they feel footsteps. This photograph was taken where a boardwalk crosses a very wet area so they don’t hear/feel you coming.
I am not sure why I was leaving Plum Island late in the evening but I am glad I was, normally you are shooting into the sun so it isn’t the best time but this worked
