This owl was a regular on Plum Island if you got there early enough. It just depended if it chose the right side of the trail to hunt, the wrong side and it was into the rising sun. I missed it one day and it actually brushed me as it flew away in disgust
a pair of otters had made/found holes in the ice along the edge of this reedbed and were using them to get fish out. I was letting a kid look at them through my camera and realized that they were mating – oh well they will have to learn one day! We watched the three kits develop over the summer
There was one reserve down on The Cape that had a major population of these tiny crabs (this one is big but isn’t much more than an inch across). They are very sensitive to vibration and disappear down their burrows when they feel footsteps. This photograph was taken where a boardwalk crosses a very wet area so they don’t hear/feel you coming.
