We stalked a pair of these all winter only for them to nest beside the parking lot. Most of their winter perches were deep in the scrub but every now and then they would perch on this branch over the path – why did it have to be a day with a bright blue sky?
the young GHOs soon moved back into the scrub when they could fly so the winter’s effort of finding their perches wasn’t wasted. It has just the hint of its “horns” developing. It must have been deep in the scrub as this shot is at ISO 1000 and 1/100S on 840mm focal length!
No sign of any white on its head so probably 4 months old (photographed in December). It is a bit of a cheat as it isn’t about to pounce on some poor unsuspecting prey – the post it was about to land on has been cloned out
